Just before Christmas 2005 I heard a radio programme report (old technology) about a ‘new’ pastime called Geocaching. It was described as a kind of treasure hunting using a GPS (http://www.libanphone.com/gsm-glossary-of-terms.htm). Having once been a keen orienteer and also quite keen on technology, this sounded a really good pastime.
I did a little research and found an excellent site (http://www.geocaching.com) which explained in more detail what it was all about. More importantly, I discovered that there was actually quite a large geocaching community in Scotland who have placed ‘caches’ (the ‘treasure’) in all sorts of different interesting places.
Duly interested, I asked ‘Santa’ for a GPS for my Christmas.
You must register with a geocaching site (the one above is the most ‘global’) and there you can get details including co-ordinates of caches near your chosen area.
I have now now logged a number of caches in my local area and am currently planning to place my own caches.
